Artist in Residence "Imaginary Patterns" - Klara Vith
I had the absolute privilege of spending a month as artist-in-residence in the atelier flat at Superbude Vienna. From early December 2023 until mid January 2024, I split my time between two video based works as well as an object prototype. I had planned on working within the video game Sims 4, creating modifications that would add a layer of realism and anxiety in the form of constantly rising electricity and gas bills as well as council tax to the game. I abandoned this idea relatively quickly in favour of focusing on existing in-game text, and the presentation of a few pieces in the context of the Superbude lobby. The residency offered me time and space to learn new skills while seeing a project through right to the end.

I started out building the atelier I was living and working in for the duration of my stay, and doing tests of in-game screen recordings. After two weeks of testing and solidifying my ideas somewhat I went about building more rooms, trying to find the best setup to trap my avatar in. The FM4 Bude 501 and the reading room 329 made it to the final stages. For a long time I was not sure where this process was going to take me, but I did know that alongside it I wanted to build a small kinetic object using micro electronics. I have had a fascination with food items in video games for quite some time, having previously
made tufted rugs and work about sweet rolls from Skyrim and doughnuts from GTA5 among others. What started out as a piece of toast made from paper and cardboard eventually became a 3D-printed, sanded and painted grilled cheese toast that is true to the original Sims 4 3D mesh, scaled to life-size. Powered by a microcontroller and servo motor with a potentiometer for speed adjustment, it ended up slowly rotating, the black box housing the electronics simultaneously letting it appear to be hovering slightly above the surface it’s placed on.

With the help of the wonderful Superbude team, two video works I created were installed on spare retro TVs in the lobby where they could blend in with the living room-like surroundings. The sandwich sits on a shelf very close-by, carrying on its endless rotation.
I cannot put into words how much I enjoyed my time at the residency – from the warm welcome by the team, to lunches in the canteen, fun evenings in the lobby and the luxury of a very comfortable and beautiful space to live and work in, I felt looked after yet left alone enough to have a few really productive weeks of work and development. I set out to learn a few new skills, and gained much more than that during my month at the Bude. Thank you all for all your help, support and, above all, company!
